Youth Volunteer Awards Evening

On Wednesday 9th November the Neath Port Talbot Youth Volunteer Awards were held in Neath Port Talbot College to celebrate the hard work and dedication of young people across the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot. The aim of the awards was to recognise young volunteers in Neath Port Talbot who go the extra mile. There were ten award categories, the winners of each category are listed below:

  • Tesco Maesteg Big Heart Award for campaigning and fundraising- Rachel Donne, SNAC
  • TATA Steel Eco Award for green-fingered volunteers- ‘You Have a Choice DVD Group’
  • Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership Sports Volunteer Award for sports-savvy volunteers- Sian Lewis, Neath Afan Gymnastics
  • Neath Port Talbot College Student Volunteer Award for students who make a difference- Selina Jones, Llangatwg Community School
  • Neath Chamber of Trade Spirit Award for all around commitment to volunteering- Alex Burnett, Neath Port Talbot Broadcasting CIC
  • Neath Port Talbot CVS Community Award for those who help improve their community- Graham Rees Evans, Scouts
  • Neath Market Traders Federation Triumph Award for overcoming personal adversity- Emily Edwards, Little Princess Trust
  • Enterprise in the Valleys Group Award for team activity- Mini F.A.Ns
  • Buffoon Film and Media’s Under 16 Volunteer of the Year Award for outstanding contribution to volunteering- Sarah-Louise Lewis, Cwmafan Communities First
  • Nettie Bettie’s Coffee Lounge 16-25 Volunteer of the Year Award for outstanding contribution to volunteering- Sarah Wells

Thank you to all individuals who nominated young people and congratulations to all the young people who were awarded certificates on the night.

European Year of Volunteering (EYV)

2011 has been designated the European Year of Volunteering (EYV) in order to draw public attention to volunteering. The importance of volunteering has long been acknowledged by the EU and now the EYV 2011 aims to inform the general public about the benefits of volunteering. The year will foster an understanding for the importance of volunteering in creating a more democratic, caring and responsible society[1]. Its main aims are:

  • promoting volunteering amongst European citizens
  • supporting and reinforcing European volunteering organisations
  • improving the recognition of voluntary work and the challenges it is facing
  • celebrating the commitment of millions of European volunteers, who devote themselves to supporting people, causes or communities, both within the EU and abroad
