Macmillan Cancer Support Launches Report

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Macmillan Cancer Support has today launched a comprehensive policy report that contains recommendations on how to make cancer care in Wales more person-centred. The report, called Changing Cancer Care in Wales, is the result of three years of extensive research and consultation with people affected by cancer in Wales, those working in cancer care in Wales and academics. The report also draws on numerous studies, research and data from the Government, other organisations and the public sector to build a picture of cancer care in Wales today. The report makes two key recommendations that Macmillan hopes the next Welsh Assembly Government will implement following the election in May:

  1. Wales needs a national and comprehensive person-centred cancer strategy that gets to grips with the changing nature of cancer and puts people at its heart.
  2. As part of the development of a cancer strategy for Wales, four key initiatives need to be developed to make cancer care more person-centred and cost effective including:
  • Assessment and care planning
  • Reforming cancer follow up
  • Personalised information and support
  • Access to a key worker

Download the report here.

The Budget Heralds Good News For Volunteer Drivers And Community Car Schemes

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

The Community Transport Association (CTA) is delighted that in his Budget today, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has responded to calls from the CTA and Volunteering England, by extending the HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) rate for passenger payments currently in place for business employees, at 5 pence per passenger per mile, to volunteers.  Therefore, with the 5p increase to the AMAP to 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, this will mean that volunteers can now be reimbursed up to 50p per mile tax free, when carrying passengers.  Keith Halstead, Chief Executive of the Community Transport Association UK said “The CTA is extremely pleased that the Chancellor has responded to our request to remove this barrier to volunteering.  Thousands of volunteer drivers across the UK, and, more importantly, the communities that they serve through their social car schemes, will be delighted to hear this news”.Further information is available from the CTA Call Keith Halstead on 07917586147 / 0161 351 1475

Choose Well – choose the right health service

Monday, March 7th, 2011

The Welsh Assembly Government, in conjunction with NHS Wales is launching the Choose Well campaign to boost public awareness about the NHS services available to them. Evidence shows that a significant number of people still go to Hospital Emergency Departments (A&E) or dial 999 when there are other services more convenient and suitable for their needs. The campaign uses a colour coded thermometer to help people to link their symptoms with a particular NHS service which is right for their need.

As people increasingly seek help in managing their household budgets, it’s more important than ever to look for the best deal to suit your needs, whatever you’re buying.

When it comes to the telephone, there are lots of phone, calling and internet packages available and at first glance the choices may seem quite confusing.

Charities and Investment Matters Consultation

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

We are consulting about draft guidance on charity investments. Before we publish the revised guidance, we want to make sure that charity trustees and those who act for them:

  • are able to find the answers to the common questions they have about investing their charity’s money
  • have information to help them in weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to investment

This consultation will help us to assess whether any further work is needed to achieve this.

The contultation is open untill 28th Febuary 2011, more information can be found by clicking here.

Local Energy – Big Society

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker, has launched a new website – Community Energy Online – which provides support to local authorities and community groups to develop local low carbon and renewable energy projects.

During the launch, Mr Barker described communities installing their own low carbon energy as ‘epitomising the vision of the Big Society’.

The website has been developed with community networks, the Local Government Group and industry bodies like the CHPA (Combined Heat and Power Association). It is designed to give communities access to information from different independent sources on generating low carbon heat and power.

Community Learning Library Grants

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Recently launched, the 2011/12 round of this programme aims to deliver modern library facilities throughout Wales. It will enable more people to benefit from an enhanced range of education and learning opportunities, whilst promoting the cultural and recreational use of public libraries.

Capital funds will be allocated to address the current state of many public library buildings, which is a barrier in attracting people to make use of these facilities.
