Healthy Eating
- Eat the right amount to be a healthy weight; if necessary reduce your portion sizes.
- You should eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and aim to eat at least five portions a day. A portion is roughly 85g (e.g. a medium apple), or about a handful.
- Avoid eating too many foods that contain a lot of fat. Trimming visible fat from meat or choosing low fat varieties are a good idea.
- Try not to have sugary foods and drinks too often.
- Grill or oven-cook rather than fry.
- Get out of the habit of adding salt to your food. Check the labels, as you may be surprised what some foods contain. What’s a lot? (Per 100g) (15g of sugars, 20g of fat, 5g of saturates, 0.6g of sodium or 1.5g of salt)
A healthy diet also contains about two litres (3.5 pints or 6-8 glasses) of fluids a day. Everything counts – water, milk, and hot drinks – but not alcohol. If you drink alcohol, drink sensibly and limit the amount.
