Neath Port Talbot CVS Annual General Meeting

Neath Port Talbot CVS held their 13th Annual General Meeting on Thursday 3rd November 2011 at the Aberavon Beach Hotel, Port Talbot. Over 200 people including the local community, voluntary organisations and partners attended. The event was a celebration of the local Third Sector and the part Neath Port Talbot CVS has in supporting and developing it.

The meeting was chaired by Margaret Thorne CBE,DL who gave a warm welcome and introduction to the evening’s speakers. In a heartfelt pre-recorded message Hollywood star Michael Sheen emphasised the importance of making local and lasting connections within a community that should not be taken for granted, but is ‘something you have to work for, acknowledge, celebrate and fight for, if you feel it’s under threat’. He highlighted the efforts of the groups and individuals who made the Passion Play earlier this year such a triumph and gave a personal thank you for Neath Port Talbot CVS’ role in bringing local organisations and people together. ‘We should be judged as a society on the basis of how we include the most vulnerable people in our community’. Michael Sheen

Gaynor Richards, Director – Neath Port Talbot CVS presented the Annual Report for 2010-2011, which highlights how Neath Port Talbot CVS, working with its partners, has helped strengthen voluntary and community action, offering solutions to some of the many challenges faced by our communities. ‘The Third Sector is a vital component of a fair and enterprising society, where individuals and communities feel empowered and enabled to achieve change. There is a real value in its diversity, providing a voice for under represented groups, in campaigning for change, in creating strong, active and connected communities in delivering effective services, and providing enterprising solutions to social and environmental challenges.’ Gaynor Richards – Director

The keynote address was given by Ruth Marks, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales. The Commissioner gave an update on her Dignified Care? Review into whether older people are treated with dignity and respect in hospitals as well as the launch of her Review into advocacy arrangements in care homes in Wales. Ruth commented “It was a pleasure to be able to meet so many active volunteers from Neath Port Talbot. Issues of concern raised with me included hospital waiting times, the quality of home care and transport. I will monitor progress in these areas carefully.“The work of older volunteers and carers in the community gives real cause for celebration. We need to recognise the contribution older people make to our society and support needs to be available to ensure this backbone of society can continue.”

The event was closed with a vote of thanks given by Paul Roberts Chief Executive of ABMU Health Board who recently came in to post.
